Rimless and open-top aquariums look clean, but a startled fish can clear the waterline in an instant and end up on the floor. Aqua Medic Hopstop (3 Pcs L 480 X W 50mm Acrylic Strips) (SKU: AM41812) is Aqua Medic’s jump protection for open-top tanks: three strips, each 480 mm long and 50 mm wide, that clamp onto the top edge of the glass to form an inward ledge around the rim. A fish that shoots up along the glass meets the strip instead of open air and drops back. Reef Builders, reporting on its release, describes hopstop as aimed mainly at fish that escape at the corners and ends of a tank, such as clownfish.

The strips are held by clamps on the front and side panes and suit glass up to 12 mm thick, and they can be cut to length, so the three pieces can be arranged to cover corners and short ends or the full front of a smaller tank; longer aquariums take additional kits. Because the middle of the top stays open, hopstop keeps the open look, lets light from a pendant or bracket-mounted LED fall on the water without a cover glass in the way, and leaves easy access for feeding and maintenance. It is not a brace and adds no strength to the glass. Fish that jump from the middle of the tank, such as anthias and flasher wrasses, can still escape through the open centre, so for those species a full mesh lid remains the safer choice.
