Description

Mantis Ceramic Coral Frag Plug (25pcs) — Ceramic mounting plugs for propagated coral frags

A cut coral frag needs something solid to attach to before it can be glued onto display rock, and bare rock rubble is rarely the right shape or size for a frag rack. Mantis Ceramic Coral Frag Plug (25pcs) (SKU: MA069804) is a pack of 25 ceramic plugs for mounting newly propagated coral frags, sized to sit in a standard frag rack and to be glued or wedged into display rock once the frag has grown out. The ceramic body gives coralline algae and the frag’s own tissue a stable, inert surface to encrust over, which is the usual way a plug eventually disappears from view as the colony matures. Supplied as a pack of 25, the quantity suits a batch fragging session rather than mounting a single piece.

Each plug is used the same way regardless of the coral being fragged: the cut frag is glued to the flat top of the plug with a cyanoacrylate or gel coral adhesive, the plug is slotted into a frag rack to hold it upright while tissue recovers, and once the frag has encrusted and is ready to go on display, the whole plug is glued or wedged directly onto the main rockwork. Ceramic plugs are the standard alternative to frag-safe cement or bare rock rubble because the flat, consistent base fits rack holes cleanly and the plug can be labelled or photographed for tracking a frag’s growth before it goes on show. The pack is intended for marine reef aquariums and is not required for freshwater plants or ornaments.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Fragging a colony: Mounting several cut frags from one coral onto individual plugs in a single session.
  • Frag racks and grow-out tanks: Holding newly cut frags upright while tissue recovers and encrusts.
  • Trading and selling frags: A plug gives a frag a stable, gluable base buyers can mount straight onto their own rock.
  • Replacing broken mounts: Re-plugging a frag that has come away from a cracked or lost base.

Placement & Care Guide

  • Glue the frag to the plug: Apply coral adhesive to the flat top and hold the frag steady until it sets.
  • Rack it to recover: Slot the plug into a frag rack or egg crate so the frag sits upright in good flow and light.
  • Check for encrustation: Leave the frag until tissue has spread over the plug’s edge before moving it to display rock.
  • Mount on display: Glue or wedge the encrusted plug into a gap in the main rockwork once ready.
