An open drain in an overflow chamber will swallow anything that drifts past: snails, a small fish, a dislodged frag or a clump of algae, and any of them can block the pipe down to the sump. Aqua Medic Outlet/overflow Strainer 20mm / L = 160mm (SKU: AM41820) is Aqua Medic’s outlet strainer for 20 mm pipework, a slotted tube made of ABS that protects drains from coarse dirt while letting water through. This version is the long one in the 20 mm size, at approximately 160 mm, listed by Aqua Medic as item 418.20. The extra length gives a larger slotted surface than the short 82 mm version, so the strainer is slower to clog when leaves and detritus collect on it.

Aqua Medic makes the strainers to match its pipe sizes, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm, measured on the outside diameter, so this one belongs to the 20 mm system. Being the same outside diameter as 20 mm pipe, it fits straight into a 20 mm bulkhead or fitting of matching size; where it has to join a length of PVC pipe, a 20 mm socket is used between the two. In an overflow chamber it stands upright on the drain bulkhead. The slots need clearing from time to time, as anything trapped against them gradually reduces the open area; a soft brush under running water is enough. ABS does not corrode, and the strainer suits both marine and freshwater systems.
