Not every overflow box has room for a tall strainer: shallow weir boxes, compact all-in-one rear chambers and low sump compartments often leave only a few centimetres above the drain. Aqua Medic Outlet/overflow Strainer 20mm / L = 82mm (SKU: AM41821) is the short version of Aqua Medic’s 20 mm outlet strainer, approximately 82 mm long and listed as item 418.21. Like the rest of the range it is a slotted ABS tube that protects drains from coarse dirt, holding back snails, small fish, algae and detritus while water passes through the slots, but at roughly half the length of the 160 mm model it fits where the longer strainer would hit the water surface or the lid.

The strainers are made to Aqua Medic’s metric pipe sizes, measured on the outside diameter, from 20 mm up to 63 mm, and this is the most compact one in the range. With the same outside diameter as 20 mm pipe, it pushes directly into a matching 20 mm bulkhead or fitting, and a 20 mm socket is used if it has to connect to a run of PVC pipe. The trade-off for the short body is a smaller slotted area, so in a tank that sheds a lot of detritus it needs checking a little more often than the long version; lifting it out and brushing the slots under running water restores the flow. ABS is unaffected by salt water, so the same part works in reef and freshwater systems.
