It protects the drain from coarse dirt: snails, small fish, pieces of algae and loose detritus are held at the slots while the water carries on to the sump. The wider bore suits overflows that already run 25 mm pipework to the filter.

Aqua Medic builds the strainers in its metric pipe sizes, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm on the outside diameter; this is the 25 mm model, which sits one step above the two 20 mm versions.
