Some overflows suit a permanently fixed comb, others need one that can be clipped on and off; this version covers both. Aqua Medic Overflow Comb 50 Incl. Holder & Clip (SKU: AM41805) is Aqua Medic’s 50 cm overflow comb supplied with a pocket and a set of clips. Water drains evenly between its long teeth, while plant debris and dirt are held back and fish stay in the aquarium. The pocket is glued to the overflow box and the comb simply slots into it, lifting out again for cleaning; the pocket is also prepared to take Aqua Medic’s flexible combfix holder. Alternatively, the comb can go straight onto the glass pane without the pocket, held by the clips, on glass 6 to 8 mm thick.

The comb is about 50 cm long with teeth of about 3.7 cm. Fitted in the pocket it stands about 8 cm tall; clipped directly to the glass, without the pocket, it is about 5.5 cm. The long teeth leave a deep slotted zone, so surface water and the film that collects on it are drawn evenly across the full width rather than at one point, and the level in the display settles within the teeth. The choice of mounting can wait until the overflow is in front of the installer: glue the pocket where a clean, permanent seat is wanted, or use the clips on 6 to 8 mm glass for a fit that can be moved or removed without adhesive. Either way, the teeth need brushing occasionally as algae narrow the slots.
