Loose media is only as useful as the bag holding it, and cheap drawstring mesh has a habit of spilling carbon into the return pump at the worst moment. Quantum Polyester Media Bags 3 Pack (SKU: QA750100) replaces that with three heavy-duty polyester bags, each closed by a proper zipper rather than a cord. The pack covers three sizes, 150, 200 and 250 mm square, so a nano sump, a canister basket and a full-size sump chamber can each have a bag that fits the space instead of one bag folded to suit.

The 800 micron weave is the useful middle ground for aquarium media. It is fine enough to hold granular carbon, phosphate removers and small biological media, yet open enough that water moves through the bag rather than around it, which is the whole point of putting media in the flow path. Because the bags are reusable, the routine each month is the same: unzip, tip out the spent media, refill, zip, rinse and put the bag back. The smallest bag holds at least 500 mL, the middle one 1,250 mL and the largest 2,500 mL.

When to Use

How to Use

• Pick the size to the chamber: Leave room for the media to move, as a bag packed solid channels water around the edges.
• Fill and zip: Add the measured media, close the zipper fully and rinse the bag under RODI or tank water until the run-off is clear.
• Place in flow: Position the bag where water must pass through it, such as a baffle chamber or a filter basket, rather than in still water.
• Reuse: Empty and rinse the bag at each media change; a spare bag makes swap-overs quicker.
