Red Sea Sump Modification Kit — Thin-blade tool set to make an older REEFER sump ReefMat-ready

The silicone seams in a REEFER sump are under 0.2 mm thick, and an ordinary utility knife is too thick to get into them without scoring the glass. Red Sea Sump Modification Kit (SKU: RED198) is Red Sea’s set of specialty tools for cutting those seams, made to prepare older-generation REEFER sumps for a ReefMat 500 or 1200 fleece roller in about 15 minutes, with no draining or moving of the tank. The kit holds a utility blade handle with snap-off blades, two 0.1 mm blades, two 0.15 mm blades, a blade storage case and a small glass scraper for cleaning off the excess silicone afterwards.

Red Sea’s installation guide explains where it is needed. Sump modification is the only route to a ReefMat on the REEFER 170, XL 200, 250 up to serial 17999, 3XL 900 and REEFER-S 850 and 1000, and it is one of two options on the 250 v3, XL 300, 350, XL 425, 450, XL 525, XXL 625, XXL 750 and the Peninsula 500 and 650 with doors on the right; MAX-S and left-door Peninsula 650 need no modification, and current sumps ship ReefMat-ready. The blades are thin and flexible to reach tight joints, suitable for saltwater, and handled with gloves and eye protection.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Fitting a ReefMat to an older REEFER: Removing the ATO reservoir wall or filter-sock section the roller needs to occupy.
  • Models that require it: REEFER 170, XL 200, early 250, 3XL 900, S-850 and S-1000.
  • Models with a choice: 250 v3 through XXL 750 and right-door Peninsulas, where cutting is Option 1.
  • Other glass sump work: Any job that calls for separating siliconed glass or acrylic without draining.

How to Use

  • Protect yourself: Gloves and eye protection on before the blades come out.
  • Follow the Red Sea guide: Check the sump serial number and the ReefMat installation document for the parts to remove.
  • Cut the seams: Fit a 0.1 or 0.15 mm blade and work it along the silicone joint until the panel frees.
  • Scrape clean: Use the glass scraper to lift residual silicone for a clean finish before installing the ReefMat.
