Corals are grown, judged and traded on how they look from above, yet the rippling surface of a reef tank turns any top-down view into a blur of reflections. Aqua Medic TopView 200 (SKU: AM65960) is Aqua Medic’s viewing and photography glass, item 65960, made of acrylic and designed to float on the water surface, giving a clear view through the surface into the coral world. It measures approximately 200 mm in diameter and 50 mm high. Because the flat window sits in the water below the moving surface, Aqua Medic states that it produces no distorted images, and the flow pumps do not need to be switched off while it is in use.

A smartphone can be placed directly in the TopView, camera facing down, which Aqua Medic says avoids annoying light reflections from room lights and the aquarium lighting. That makes it useful for coral photographs from the angle most colonies are grown to be seen, for checking colour and polyp extension, and for close inspection of the upper surfaces of corals and rock for pests. At 200 mm across it frames a frag rack section or a small colony at a time and can be slid along the surface to the next spot. Acrylic scratches more easily than glass, so it is best rinsed in fresh water after use, wiped with a soft cloth and stored away from sand and abrasive pads.
