Rift lake cichlids come from some of the hardest, most alkaline freshwater on earth, and a tank filled from a soft tap will not hold that chemistry by itself. Quantum African Lake pH Buffer | KH Conditioner 250ml (SKU: QA300250) is Quantum’s African Lake Buffer Pro, a solution of safe KH and pH salts in deionised water formulated to raise carbonate hardness to the desired level while regulating pH, so the water behaves like the lakes the fish evolved in. It is designed to work alongside African Lake Pro Salt GH, because temperature and the triad of GH, KH and pH decide the quality and longevity of a cichlid aquarium.

The dose is 10 mL per 100 L for a rise of 1 dKH, and Quantum publishes two sets of targets: 4 to 8 dKH with a pH of 7.8 to 8.5 for Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria species, and 7 to 12 dKH with a pH of 8.5 to 9.2 for Lake Tanganyika. During a water change only the volume being replaced is dosed. On a 200 L mbuna tank changing 50 L a week from RO water, bringing the new water to 6 dKH takes 30 mL, so the 250 mL bottle covers around eight changes and suits a first tank or a trial of the range.

• Weekly water changes: Conditioning the replacement water so KH and pH do not dip after each change.
• Soft tap or RO water: Homes where the supply carries little carbonate hardness of its own.
• Shell dwellers and mbuna alike: Any rift lake community, with the target chosen by lake.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Pick the lake: 4 to 8 dKH and pH 7.8 to 8.5 for Malawi and Victoria fish; 7 to 12 dKH and pH 8.5 to 9.2 for Tanganyika.
• Dose 10 mL per 100 L per 1 dKH: Multiply the rise wanted by the litres being treated.
• Water changes: Treat only the new water, matched to the tank’s KH, before it goes in.
• Pair with Pro Salt GH: Keep general hardness in range with the companion product so all three parameters move together.
