Keeping discus in RO water is easy until the pH falls off a cliff, and the fix is a small amount of carbonate hardness added on purpose. Quantum Amazon River KH Conditioner 500ml (SKU: QA320500) is the 500 mL size of Quantum’s Amazon River KH Pro, a solution of safe KH salts in deionised water formulated to raise KH gently to replicate Amazon river water. Without KH and pH under control the pH of a soft tank fluctuates, and that fluctuation reduces the efficiency of the biochemical processes the fish rely on. It works alongside Amazon River pH Pro and Amazon River Pro Salt GH.

Ten millilitres per 100 L raises KH by 0.5 dKH, and the recommended range is 0.5 to 2 dKH. During a water change, dose only the volume being replaced. A 300 L discus tank changing 75 L a week from RO water to 1.5 dKH uses 22.5 mL, so the bottle lasts about twenty-two changes; breeders doing larger daily changes on smaller tanks use it faster but still get months from it. The half-degree step means the tank can be nudged rather than shoved, which is the whole point in soft water.
