A tank of oscars or big rainbowfish drinks minerals as fast as it dirties the water, and the 500 mL bottle keeps pace with a weekly change routine. Quantum American/Aust MPMC GH 500ml (SKU: QA360500) is the 500 mL size of Quantum’s American/Australian Pro Salt GH, a solution of major, minor and trace elements in deionised water formulated to raise general hardness gently and in the ratio of American lakes and Australian waterways. Macrobiotics, probiotics and vitamin precursors are included to promote beneficial bacteria and fish vitality, and it is designed to be used with American/Australian Buffer Pro for KH and pH.

Ten millilitres per 100 L raises GH by 1 dGH, with a recommended range of 2 to 4 dGH, and only the replacement water is dosed at a change. Taking 75 L of RO water to 3 dGH for a 300 L tank uses 22.5 mL, which gives the bottle about twenty-two weekly changes. Because many biochemical processes in the fish depend on magnesium and calcium, and because these fish draw much of it from the water rather than their food, the level is kept steady rather than allowed to drift down between changes.
