Big predatory cichlids need big tanks and big water changes, and every one of those changes has to be buffered. Quantum American/Aust pH Buffer | KH Conditioner 1L (SKU: QA351000) is the litre size of Quantum’s American/Australian Buffer Pro, a solution of safe KH and pH salts in deionised water formulated to raise carbonate hardness to the desired level and regulate pH, replicating the American lakes and Australian waterways. It is built to work with American/Australian Pro Salt GH, since a tank’s long-term quality rests on the balance of temperature, GH, KH and pH.

The dose is 10 mL per 100 L for every 1 dKH of rise, applied to the replacement water at a change. The recommended levels are 3 to 6 dKH with pH 7.5 to 8.5 for American cichlid and Australian native aquariums. On a 500 L tank changing 125 L a week, taking RO water to 4 dKH uses 50 mL, so a litre covers about twenty changes; a native display held at 6 dKH uses 75 mL a change and gets thirteen. Large fish also consume KH between changes, so a test mid-week is worthwhile.
