A 300 L oscar tank produces a lot of waste, and waste eats carbonate hardness, so the buffer bottle in that fish room is never far from empty. Quantum American/Aust pH Buffer | KH Conditioner 500ml (SKU: QA350500) is the 500 mL size of Quantum’s American/Australian Buffer Pro, a solution of safe KH and pH salts in deionised water that raises KH to the level the keeper chooses while regulating pH to match the American lakes and Australian waterways. It is designed to be used with American/Australian Pro Salt GH, because temperature together with the triad of GH, KH and pH decides how well the aquarium runs.

Ten millilitres per 100 L raises KH by 1 dKH, and the recommended levels are 3 to 6 dKH with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5 for American cichlid and Australian native tanks. Only the replacement water is dosed at a change. Conditioning 75 L of RO water to 4 dKH for a 300 L tank takes 30 mL, so the bottle lasts about sixteen weekly changes; a heavily stocked tank whose KH falls between changes may need a small top-up as well, tested first.
