Description

Aqua-Pics African GH Salt 150g — Mineral conditioner that lifts GH for Rift Valley cichlid tanks

A single 100 to 200 litre Rift Lake tank does not need a sackful of salt, only enough to top up hardness after each water change. Aqua-Pics African GH Salt 150g (SKU: 113203) is a phosphate-free mineral conditioner from Aqua-Pics (Australia), blended to recreate the hard, alkaline water of Africa’s Rift Valley Great Lakes for Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria cichlids. It raises general hardness (GH) and supplies minerals, elements and trace elements said to assist osmotic regulation in African cichlids, along with fertility and egg production. This 150 g tub is the smallest size, pitched at one display tank rather than a fish room.

The standard dose is 1 level teaspoon, about 5 g, per 10 L, which raises GH by roughly 12 dGH (215 ppm) and stabilises pH near 8.3, suiting Malawi and Victoria cichlids. For Tanganyika cichlids a rounded teaspoon, about 8 g, per 10 L lifts GH to roughly 19 dGH (340 ppm); a dose between the two settles a mixed Malawi/Tanganyika tank at around 16 dGH with pH above 8.0. At the standard dose this tub treats up to about 300 L, enough for several water changes on one tank. It is the entry point in a range of eight sizes up to a 20 kg trade pack.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Malawi and Victoria cichlids: Standard dose builds the alkaline, mineral-rich water these lakes are known for.
  • Tanganyika cichlids: Heavier dose matches Lake Tanganyika’s higher hardness and pH.
  • After water changes: Tap water is usually softer than lake water, so GH needs topping straight back up.
  • Breeding set-ups: Also said to support fertility and egg production in breeding pairs.

Mixing & Application Guide

  • Standard dose: 5 g (1 level tsp) per 10 L raises GH by about 12 dGH (215 ppm) and settles pH near 8.3.
  • Tanganyika dose: 8 g (rounded tsp) per 10 L raises GH to about 19 dGH (340 ppm).
  • Mixed African tank: A dose between the two lands around 16 dGH with pH above 8.0.
  • Dissolve before dosing: Stir the measured salt into a cup of tank or change water rather than sprinkling it dry over fish or substrate.
