Description

Aqua-Pics African GH Salt 250g — Phosphate-free hardness booster for Malawi and Victoria cichlids

Malawi and Victoria cichlids come from water harder and more alkaline than most Australian tap supplies, and that gap needs correcting at every water change, not just once. Aqua-Pics African GH Salt 250g (SKU: 101605) is a phosphate-free mineral conditioner from Aqua-Pics (Australia), formulated to lift general hardness (GH) toward the levels found in Africa’s Rift Valley Great Lakes, with separate built-in dose rates for Malawi/Victoria water and the harder water of Lake Tanganyika. The blend supplies minerals, elements and trace elements the maker credits with supporting osmotic regulation in African cichlids, plus fertility and egg production. At 250 g it is the second-smallest size, enough for one tank’s water changes across a season rather than a one-off trial.

The standard dose, 1 level teaspoon or about 5 g per 10 L, raises GH by roughly 12 dGH (215 ppm) and settles pH near 8.3, matching Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria. Tanganyika cichlids need more: a rounded teaspoon, about 8 g, per 10 L lifts GH to around 19 dGH (340 ppm), and splitting the difference gives a mixed African tank roughly 16 dGH with pH above 8.0. A 250 g tub treats about 500 L at the standard dose, or about 313 L if every dose is the Tanganyika rate, enough for several months of fortnightly changes on a typical display tank. The same formula runs from 150 g up to a 20 kg trade pack.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Malawi and Victoria set-ups: The standard, lower-strength dose is the right starting point.
  • Tanganyika set-ups: Switch to the rounded-teaspoon dose for its higher hardness and pH.
  • Fortnightly or monthly water changes: Re-dose every time, since fresh tap water is softer than the lakes.
  • Breeding colonies: The blend is said to help with fertility and egg production.

Mixing & Application Guide

  • Standard rate: 5 g per 10 L for about 12 dGH (215 ppm) and pH near 8.3.
  • Tanganyika rate: 8 g per 10 L for about 19 dGH (340 ppm).
  • Blended rate: A dose between the two for roughly 16 dGH and pH above 8.0.
  • Add to the water, not the fish: Dissolve the measured dose in a jug of tank water before pouring it in.
