Tap water in many areas comes out at 7.8 or higher, which is too alkaline for tetras, discus and most planted tanks. Quantum Aqua Pro pH Down 100ml (SKU: QA450100) is the drop-dosed size of Quantum’s Freshwater Essential Plant Essential Aqua Pro pH Down, a solution of buffered sulphuric acid in deionised water formulated to decrease pH safely. Because the acid is buffered, the fall is gradual rather than a plunge, and Quantum’s guidance keeps it that way. The product is rated for planted, fish-only, shrimp and pond systems, with a published pH range for each type of freshwater tank.

Ten drops per 10 L lower pH by about 0.2, added directly into high water flow without shaking. The change must not exceed 0.3 pH in a day, so a tank coming down from 7.8 to 6.8 for South American fish takes four or five days with a test each morning. Quantum’s ranges set the destination: 6.0 to 7.0 for South American tanks, 6.0 to 6.8 for high-tech planted, 6.5 to 7.5 for community and shrimp. The solution is not for dosing pumps, and the manufacturer’s note that dosage varies by aquarium means testing and adjusting in increments rather than dosing to a formula.

• Nano and small tanks: Systems under about 60 L where drops give fine control.
• Alkaline tap water: Bringing a small tank down from a supply that reads 7.8 or more.
• Soft-water species: Tetras, apistogramma, betta and shrimp tanks kept below neutral.
• Planted nano scapes: Low-KH tanks aiming for 6.0 to 6.8 with pressurised CO₂.
