Bringing a tank’s pH down is the one adjustment that punishes impatience, which is why a buffered product and a daily limit matter. Quantum Aqua Pro pH Down 250ml (SKU: QA450250) is Quantum’s Freshwater Essential Plant Essential Aqua Pro pH Down in its most common size, a solution of buffered sulphuric acid in deionised water formulated to decrease pH safely. Regulating pH prevents the fluctuation that reduces the efficiency of the biochemical processes fish, shrimp and plants depend on. Quantum lists it for planted, fish-only, shrimp and pond systems and publishes a pH range for each.

Half a capful, about 5 mL, per 100 L lowers pH by roughly 0.2, added into high water flow with no shaking, and the change is limited to 0.3 pH per day. The published ranges are 6.0 to 7.0 for South American tanks, 6.0 to 6.8 for high-tech planted, 6.5 to 7.5 for community and shrimp and 6.8 to 7.5 for low-tech planted. Quantum notes that dosage varies from aquarium to aquarium, so the method is to dose, test and adjust incrementally. A 200 L tank taken down 0.2 uses 10 mL, giving the bottle about twenty-five corrections. Dosing pumps are not suitable.

When to Use

• Home soft-water tanks: Tetra, discus and apistogramma systems of 60 to 300 L on alkaline tap water.
• Planted aquariums: Scapes aiming for 6.0 to 6.8 with or without CO₂.
• New water preparation: Adjusting change water to the tank’s pH before it goes in.
• Shrimp tanks: Caridina set-ups kept in the acidic half of 6.5 to 7.5.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Measure before dosing: The current pH and the published range for the livestock.
• Half a capful per 100 L: About 5 mL for a 0.2 fall, into high flow, no shaking.
