Large systems with big fish populations produce phosphate faster than any media reactor comfortably handles, and liquid lanthanum is the usual answer. Quantum AR Phosphate Remover 1L (SKU: QA151000) is a solution of purified lanthanum in deionised water that binds ionic and chemically bound phosphate and precipitates it out, leaving the filter to collect the result. The litre suits reefs and fish-only systems of several hundred litres, and Quantum rates it for LPS, mixed, SPS, NPS and FOWLR aquariums, with the one exclusion of tanks that contain live plants.

The dose depends on the reading: per 100 L daily, 0.1 to 1.0 mL at 0.03 to 0.25 ppm phosphate, 0.5 to 2.5 mL at 0.25 to 1.0 ppm, 1.0 to 5.0 mL at 1.0 to 5.0 ppm, 5.0 to 10.0 mL at 5.0 to 10.0 ppm, and 10.0 mL above 10 ppm. On a 500 L system at 0.5 ppm that is a few millilitres a day, so a litre lasts well beyond the reduction phase. The solution is added directly into high water flow and suits dosing pumps. A fine white film on the glass indicates overdosing and the product is not for aquariums containing live plants.
