Buying calcium as a powder and mixing it at home is how most experienced reef keepers cut the cost of dosing, and Quantum Aragonite A Powder 1.6kg (SKU: QA101600) is the smallest pack of Quantum’s version. The powder is calcium chloride with strontium and barium and the energy component found across the Reef Essential range, and it mixes into a concentrate at 110 g per litre of RODI water. A small bottle of solution is supplied in the pack, and half a capful, 5 mL, is added to each litre once the powder has fully dissolved. At that ratio the 1.6 kg makes roughly 14 L of concentrate.

The finished solution is a 40,000 ppm calcium concentrate, and 1 mL per 100 L raises calcium by about 0.4 ppm, with strontium and barium rising in proportion. Quantum’s target is 405 to 440 ppm calcium, and the concentrate is dosed daily alongside Aragonite B Powder for alkalinity to replace what corals consume. Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Mix at 110 g per litre: Add the powder to RODI water and stir until completely dissolved, then add half a capful (5 mL) of the supplied solution per litre.
• Protect yourself: The mix can get hot; wear glasses and gloves and mix in a container that tolerates heat.
• Dose into high flow: 1 mL per 100 L raises calcium about 0.4 ppm; set the daily amount from tested consumption and keep it away from the alkalinity dose point.
• Test weekly: Hold 405 to 440 ppm and adjust the daily volume as the coral load changes.
