It is calcium chloride with strontium and barium and the energy component that runs through the Reef Essential range, mixed at 110 g per litre of RODI water to produce 140 L of 40,000 ppm calcium concentrate. Half a capful, 5 mL, of the solution supplied in the pack is added to each litre after the powder has fully dissolved. Dosed with Aragonite B Powder for alkalinity, it forms a home-mixed two-part system at the lowest cost per dose in the range.

Each 1 mL of solution per 100 L raises calcium by about 0.4 ppm, and strontium and barium rise in proportion. Daily dosing is set from tests against Quantum’s 405 to 440 ppm target. A 2,000 L farm system consuming 10 ppm a day needs about 500 mL of solution, so 140 L covers around nine months. Mixing this much calcium chloride generates real heat, and the manufacturer’s warning to wear protective glasses and gloves should be followed on every batch; mixing in smaller lots keeps the temperature manageable.

• Mix in manageable lots: 110 g per litre of RODI water until dissolved, then half a capful (5 mL) of the supplied solution per litre; smaller batches stay cooler.

• Calculate the dose: About 0.4 ppm calcium per 1 mL per 100 L; scale the daily volume to tested consumption and dose into high flow.
• Separate lines, weekly tests: Keep calcium and alkalinity dose points apart and hold 405 to 440 ppm.
