Thirty-five litres of calcium concentrate is a long time between mixes for most reefs, and that is what Quantum Aragonite A Powder 3.9kg (SKU: QA103900) produces. The powder is calcium chloride with strontium and barium plus the energy component Quantum builds into its Reef Essential products, and it dissolves at 110 g per litre of RODI water. Once the powder has fully dissolved, half a capful, 5 mL, of the solution supplied in the pack is added to each litre. The result is a 40,000 ppm calcium concentrate ready for a dosing reservoir.

Each 1 mL of solution per 100 L raises calcium by about 0.4 ppm, with the other elements rising in proportion, and the daily dose is set from tests against Quantum’s 405 to 440 ppm target. Dosed alongside Aragonite B Powder for alkalinity, the pair replaces what a reef’s corals lay down as skeleton each day. Calcium chloride warms as it dissolves, so the manufacturer advises glasses and gloves during mixing. On a 400 L reef consuming 10 ppm of calcium a day, about 100 mL of solution is needed, and 35 L lasts close to a year.

Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Dissolve 110 g per litre: Stir the powder into RODI water until clear, then add half a capful (5 mL) of the supplied solution for every litre mixed.
• Handle with care: Expect the mix to warm up; wear protective glasses and gloves.
• Dose from tests: With 0.4 ppm per 1 mL per 100 L, work out the daily volume from measured consumption and deliver it into strong flow.
• Keep parts apart: Dose the calcium and alkalinity solutions at different points and retest weekly for 405 to 440 ppm.
