Large stony coral systems consume calcium by the tens of ppm each day, and Quantum Aragonite A Powder 7.7kg (SKU: QA107700) is sized for them. The powder, calcium chloride with strontium and barium and the energy component common to the Reef Essential range, is mixed at 110 g per litre of RODI water to make 70 L of 40,000 ppm calcium concentrate. After the powder has dissolved completely, half a capful, 5 mL, of the solution supplied in the pack goes into each litre. It is intended to be dosed with Aragonite B Powder for alkalinity as a home-mixed two-part system.

The dosing arithmetic is simple: 1 mL of solution per 100 L raises calcium by about 0.4 ppm, and the other elements rise in proportion. The daily amount is set from weekly tests against Quantum’s 405 to 440 ppm target. A 700 L system consuming 12 ppm a day needs around 210 mL of solution, so 70 L lasts close to a year. Calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves, and mixing several litres at once makes that more noticeable; the manufacturer’s advice to wear protective glasses and gloves applies every time.

Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Mix in batches: 110 g per litre of RODI water, stirred until fully dissolved, then half a capful (5 mL) of the supplied solution per litre.
• Glasses and gloves on: The mixture may become hot, especially in larger batches.
• Set the daily dose: Each 1 mL per 100 L adds about 0.4 ppm calcium; calculate from tested consumption and dose into high flow.
• Separate from alkalinity: Run the calcium and alkalinity lines to different points and test weekly for 405 to 440 ppm.
