Alkalinity is the parameter reef keepers dose most, so it is the first one worth mixing from powder. Quantum Aragonite B Powder 1.0kg (SKU: QA111200) is the smallest pack of Quantum’s alkalinity powder, a blend of sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate with a buffer component, and it dissolves at 69 g per litre of RODI water to give a 60,000 ppm alkalinity solution. At that rate the 1.0 kg makes about 14 L of concentrate, enough for a small to mid-sized reef to refill a doser reservoir many times before the pack runs out.

The finished solution raises alkalinity by 0.6 ppm, or about 0.033 dKH, for each 1 mL per 100 L, so a 200 L tank losing 0.3 dKH a day needs around 18 mL. Quantum’s target range is 7.4 to 10.5 dKH, which is 132 to 188 ppm, and the concentrate is dosed daily alongside Aragonite A Powder for calcium as a home-mixed two-part system. Dissolving carbonates warms the water, and the manufacturer advises protective glasses and gloves during mixing. At 18 mL a day, 14 L of solution lasts more than two years on that 200 L example.

Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Mix at 69 g per litre: Add the powder to RODI water and stir until completely dissolved to make a 60,000 ppm alkalinity solution.
• Protect yourself: The mix may become hot; wear glasses and gloves.
• Work out the dose: 1 mL per 100 L adds 0.6 ppm (about 0.033 dKH); set the daily volume from tested consumption and add it into high flow.
• Keep it from calcium: Dose at a different point from Aragonite A and retest weekly for 7.4 to 10.5 dKH.
