The powder, sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate with a buffer component, dissolves at 69 g per litre of RODI water to make a 60,000 ppm alkalinity solution, and the 4.9 kg pack produces 70 L of it. That is the size Quantum quotes for large reefs and frag systems, and it is meant to be dosed with Aragonite A Powder for calcium as a home-mixed two-part system.

The solution raises alkalinity by 0.6 ppm, about 0.033 dKH, for every 1 mL per 100 L, so a 700 L system losing 0.4 dKH a day needs around 85 mL, and 70 L lasts more than two years at that rate. Quantum’s target is 7.4 to 10.5 dKH, or 132 to 188 ppm, tested weekly and adjusted in small steps. Dissolving several litres of carbonate at once produces noticeable heat, and the manufacturer’s advice to wear protective glasses and gloves applies to every batch. • Set the daily dose: Each 1 mL per 100 L adds 0.6 ppm (about 0.033 dKH); calculate from tested consumption and dose into high flow.
• Separate lines: Run alkalinity and calcium to different points and test weekly for 7.4 to 10.5 dKH.
