Soft corals wage chemical war on their neighbours, and the carbon in the sump is what keeps the peace. Quantum Bio-active Carbon 500g (SKU: QA630500) is the smallest pack of Quantum’s Reef Essential Bio-active Carbon, a granular activated carbon with a pore structure that carries a greater ratio of macropores than ordinary grades. Those large pores are what adsorb big organic molecules such as coral toxins, and they double as housing for beneficial bacteria, so the media keeps a biological role as its adsorption sites fill. The 500 g pack is about 1 L of media and treats up to 3,333 L.

Monthly dosing follows stocking: 15 g per 100 L for a lightly stocked reef, 25 g for moderate and 50 g for heavy, with 250 g per 100 L for heavy-metal removal. The carbon is rinsed in RODI water until clear before each use, placed in the 800 micron zip bag supplied and run in a high-flow area or a reactor on its slowest setting, then replaced monthly. Quantum states that it does not leach phosphate and does not release what it has captured. A 200 L reef at the moderate rate uses 50 g a month, so the pack lasts ten months; a measuring cup is included.
