Zeolite earns its place in a filter by doing the one job biological media cannot do on day one: pulling ammonia out of the water before bacteria exist to eat it. Quantum Bio-active Zeolite 2.5kg (SKU: QA602500) is a natural zeolite that removes ammonia and ammonium, nitrite, nutrients, heavy metals and other unwanted molecules, made from a grade originally used to sanitise drinking water. Its smaller and more uniform particle size gives beneficial bacteria more surface to colonise, so the media keeps working biologically as its adsorption sites fill. It suits freshwater, planted, pond, FOWLR and reef aquariums.

Monthly dosing is 30 g per 100 L for a lightly stocked system, 50 g for moderate and 70 g for heavy, so the 2.5 kg pack covers about 3,600 L heavily stocked to 8,300 L lightly stocked for a month, or a 400 L tank for a year at the moderate rate. The media goes in the non-metallic zip bag supplied and sits in a reactor or a high-flow area of the filter. It can run beside activated carbon in a separate bag, but the two are never mixed. Because zeolite removes nutrients and trace elements as well as toxins, Quantum advises monitoring parameters and supplementing as required.

When to Use

Placement & Flow Guide

• Measure the monthly dose: 30, 50 or 70 g per 100 L by stocking.
• Bag and place: In the supplied zip bag, in a reactor or the highest-flow part of the filter.
• Separate from carbon: Two bags side by side if both media are wanted; the two are never combined in one.
• Replace monthly and test: Supplement any elements the zeolite strips along with the toxins.
