A mid-sized reef on nightly kalkwasser goes through a few grams every evening, and Quantum Bio-Kalkwasser 1.1kg (SKU: QA131100) keeps that routine supplied for most of a year. The powder is calcium hydroxide with the energy component Quantum includes across its Reef Essential products, and it provides hydroxide and calcium together: the hydroxide lifts pH and turns excess carbon dioxide into carbonate, the calcium goes into coral skeleton, and alkalinity and pH stability both improve as a result. At the manufacturer’s mixing rate the 1.1 kg pack makes 4,400 L of solution.

Dosing follows stocking. A lightly stocked reef takes 1 g per 100 L of aquarium, dissolved in 4 L of RODI water, for about 6 ppm of calcium; moderate stocking takes 2 g per 100 L in 4 L for 12 ppm, and heavy stocking 3 g in 4 L for 18 ppm. Quantum sets 18 ppm of calcium per night as the ceiling when kalkwasser runs alongside other calcium dosing. Only the clear supernatant is added, dripped slowly so pH does not spike, with the container kept closed to limit air contact. The targets are calcium of 405 to 440 ppm and pH between 8.1 and 8.5.

When to Use

• Mid-sized reefs with a pH sag: Systems of 200 to 400 L that drop overnight and want calcium and pH support in one product.
• Kalk drip or reactor set-ups: Keepers running a dosing pump or top-off kalk reactor on the supernatant.
• Supplementing two-part: Reefs that dose calcium already and add kalkwasser for its pH effect within the nightly cap.

Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Measure to stocking: 1, 2 or 3 g for each 100 L of aquarium, dissolved in 4 L of RODI water.
• Mix, cap, settle: Stir well, close the container to keep air out, and allow the undissolved material to drop to the bottom.
• Drip the supernatant overnight: Slow delivery into flow, with the white sediment left behind in the container.
• Stay under 18 ppm a night: Count any other calcium dosing towards the cap, and test calcium and pH regularly.
