Kalkwasser is the oldest calcium method in reefkeeping and still the only one that raises pH while it works. Quantum Bio-Kalkwasser 550g (SKU: QA130550) is Quantum’s version: calcium hydroxide with the energy component found across the Reef Essential range, designed to supply hydroxide and calcium together. Dripped in overnight, it converts excess carbon dioxide into carbonate that corals lay down as aragonite, counters the night-time pH dip and adds to alkalinity at the same time. Mixed at the manufacturer’s rate the 550 g pack makes 2,200 L of kalkwasser solution.

The dose is set by stocking. For a lightly stocked tank, 1 g is dissolved in 4 L of RODI water for every 100 L of aquarium, raising calcium by about 6 ppm; a moderately stocked tank uses 2 g in 4 L per 100 L for 12 ppm, and a heavily stocked one 3 g in 4 L for 18 ppm. Quantum caps the total at 18 ppm of calcium per night when kalkwasser is used with other calcium dosing. Only the clear supernatant is dripped in; the white sediment stays in the container. Quantum’s targets are 405 to 440 ppm calcium and a pH of 8.1 to 8.5.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Low night-time pH: Reefs that sag below 8.0 overnight and need a lift without an extra buffer.
• Light to moderate calcium demand: Small and mid-sized reefs where kalkwasser alone can replace daily consumption.
• Topping up a two-part system: Systems that dose calcium already but want the pH benefit, within the 18 ppm nightly cap.
• Any coral tank: FOWLR, LPS, mixed, NPS and SPS aquariums with a calcium and pH need.

Preparation & Dosing Guide

• Weigh by stocking: 1, 2 or 3 g per 100 L of aquarium for light, moderate or heavy stocking, each dissolved in 4 L of RODI water.
• Mix and settle: Stir thoroughly, cap the container to limit air contact, and let the undissolved material sink.
• Drip the clear layer: Deliver only the supernatant, slowly and preferably overnight; never let the white sediment reach the tank.
• Respect the cap: No more than 18 ppm of calcium per night from all sources; test calcium weekly and pH daily while settling in.
