Alkalinity is usually the first number to slide in a young reef, and a swing of a degree or two is enough to stress stony corals. Coral Essentials Carbonate+Trace 500ml (SKU: CE-CARB500) is the 500 mL bottle of Coral Essentials’ Carbonate + Trace, a concentrated liquid carbonate at 180,000 ppm (mg/L), or 10,000 dKH, blended with the maker’s Coral Power Trace C elements plus boron and bromide. Coral Essentials states that no further trace elements are needed when it is used. It is the alkalinity half of the Brisbane maker’s Primary Care two-part, dosed alongside Calcium + Trace, and like the rest of the range it is tested at the Sustainable Reefs coral farm in Cairns.

The concentration is set so that 1 mL raises carbonate by 1.8 ppm, or 0.1 dKH, in 100 L of water. Coral Essentials’ simple daily recipe is 3 mL per 100 L for a soft coral or LPS tank, 6 mL for a mixed reef and 12 mL for an SPS-dominant system, the same volumes as Calcium + Trace so both bottles run together.
