Description

Dr Tim’s AquaCleanse FRESHWATER 8oz (1,817L) — Double-size freshwater dechlorinator for big tanks and busy fish rooms

A 25 per cent change on a 400 L tank is 100 L of tap water every week, and a small bottle of conditioner disappears in a couple of months at that rate. Dr Tim’s AquaCleanse FRESHWATER 8oz (1,817L) (SKU: 81254001012) is the 236 mL size of Dr Tim’s Aquatics’ freshwater tap water detoxifier, rated by the maker’s usage chart to treat 1,817 L (480 gallons). Dr Tim’s describes it as destroying the bonds that form chlorine, chloramines and ammonia, so the toxins are gone rather than hidden, and the product has no unpleasant odour. It is formulated for freshwater aquaria; Dr Tim’s makes a separate version for marine systems.

The dose does not change with the bottle: 5 mL per 38 L (10 US gallons) of tap water, stirred for 15 seconds in a clean container that has never seen soap, before the water is added to the tank. For the 400 L tank above that is about 13 mL per change and roughly 18 changes from the bottle; a 200 L tank changing 50 L a week gets around 36. Dr Tim’s states the product cannot be overdosed, though very large amounts may lower pH where the water is poorly buffered. Because AquaCleanse also removes ammonia, Dr Tim’s advice for a tank still cycling is to dose it only as directed, to bring a rising ammonia reading down with a partial water change instead of extra conditioner, and to keep ammonia under 2 mg/L as nitrogen before adding One & Only, with which it is safe to use.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Large freshwater displays: Tanks of 300 L and more where each change runs to buckets by the dozen.
  • Several tanks on one supply: Breeding racks and fish rooms that change water on a schedule.
  • Big first fills: Conditioning hundreds of litres for a new aquarium before livestock arrives.
  • Emergency changes: Treating a large volume in a hurry after a spike or a treatment course.

Dosing & Administration Guide

  • Rate: 5 mL per 38 L of tap water; a 100 L change takes about 13 mL.
  • Mix first: Stir for 15 seconds in the bucket or barrel, then transfer the water to the tank.
  • Cycling tanks: Dose to the directions only; manage rising ammonia with water changes, not more conditioner.
  • Soft water: Avoid heavy overdoses, which Dr Tim’s says can pull pH down where buffering is low.
