Blue-green slime spreading across the sand in sheets, smelling earthy and peeling off in mats, is cyanobacteria rather than true algae, and scraping it off rarely stops it coming back. Easy-Life Bio-Exit Blue 250ml (SKU: 725127) is Easy-Life’s biological answer to cyanobacteria in freshwater aquariums. Instead of attacking the slime directly, it promotes the heterotrophic soil bacteria that break down animal waste, which Easy-Life says restores the microbiological balance in the substrate that allowed cyanobacteria to take hold. Made by Easy Life International in Duiven, the Netherlands, it is described as harmless to fish and plants when used as directed. The 250 mL bottle covers a full two-dose course for up to 500 L.

The treatment runs over two weeks. On day one, add 10 mL per 40 L of aquarium water; on day seven, repeat the same dose; on day fourteen, carry out a water change. No water should be changed during the two-week treatment, and activated carbon should be taken out of the filter beforehand because it can remove the product. Shake the bottle well before each dose and do not overdose. If cyanobacteria remain, or new growth appears afterwards, the course can be repeated. A single 10 mL dose treats 40 L, so 250 mL holds 25 doses: enough for one complete course in a 200 L tank with plenty left for a repeat, or about eight courses in a 60 L tank. Siphoning the loose mats out before the first dose and improving flow into dead spots supports the treatment.
