Once soft, acidic water has been set up for tetras or discus, the next job is keeping it there, because pH drifts between water changes. pH6 Neutraliser Block 20g (SKU: SNB6) is a 20 g Serenity Aquatics block that dissolves slowly in the aquarium, releasing minerals and vitamins to hold the water at pH 6. Serenity names tetras, discus and angelfish as the fish it is made for. One block treats up to 120 litres, and it goes into the tank whole, so there is no measuring or dosing cap to deal with.

The ingredients listed for the pH6 block are calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, sodium chloride, thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1) and humic acid, the last being one of the humic substances that tint natural blackwater streams. The block is designed to maintain pH rather than to make a large change: for a new aquarium or after a big water change, Serenity’s advice is to bring the pH down first with a fast-acting pH Down powder, then use the block to hold it. How long a block lasts depends on the starting water, and it is replaced once fully dissolved. Serenity also advises against shifting pH by more than 0.5 in any 24 hours.
