The last of the four colour bottles carries the elements that are too scarce to test for, yet still run out. Red Sea Reef Care Bioactive Elements Trace Colours D 500ml (SKU: RED286) is the D line of Red Sea’s Trace Colours series, a blend of 18 bioactive trace elements that Red Sea relates to the blue and purple chromoproteins in coral soft tissue and describes as promoting the purple and blue colours in corals. Red Sea’s manual names silver, gold, vanadium and tungsten among the eighteen, elements present in coral skeleton and tissue in minute amounts that the aquarium cannot replace on its own.

Because there is no hobby test for these elements, Red Sea ties the dose to Trace Colours C: D is dosed one-to-one with the iron supplement, both following the rule of 1 mL per 100 L for every 20 ppm of calcium added, or the measured iron uptake in ultra-low-nutrient systems. Red Sea holds that all 31 minor and trace elements in the series are needed by every stony coral whatever colour it shows, since a pigment forms only when its elements are present. Overdosing can cause tissue regression, met with a 50 per cent water change and a halved dose.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Match C: The same volume as Trace Colours C each day.

• Into the sump: Separately from the other three bottles, or slowly into high flow.
• Watch tissue: Regression or stressed shrimp and crabs mean excess; 50 per cent water change and halve the dose.
