Red Sea Reef Care Calcium+ Foundation A 1kg — Calcium and strontium powder that makes 1.8 litres of stock

Powder is how reef keepers with dosing pumps buy calcium, because a kilogram of salts makes more solution than the biggest bottle. Red Sea Reef Care Calcium+ Foundation A 1kg (SKU: RED302) is the powdered form of Red Sea’s Calcium+ Foundation A, blended salts of calcium and strontium, with barium, in the ratio found in coral skeleton. Red Sea’s figures are that 1 g raises the calcium of 100 L by 3.6 ppm, and that 1 kg dissolved in 1.8 L of RO water makes a stock solution of the same strength as the liquid, 1 mL per 100 L for 2 ppm of calcium.

The powder is used in one of two ways: weighed and dissolved in a little water for a daily or corrective addition, or made up as stock for the calcium channel of a doser. Either way the method matches the liquid: a four-day uptake test sets the daily dose, calcium is held at the recipe level for the tank type, 410 to 465 ppm, no more than 20 ppm is added in a day, and dosing runs magnesium, alkalinity, calcium into the sump. The tub can raise 400 L by 900 ppm in total; KH/Alkalinity B (RED303) and Magnesium C (RED304) powders complete the set.

Dosing & Administration Guide

  • Weigh: 1 g per 100 L raises calcium 3.6 ppm; a 400 L tank needing 9 ppm takes 10 g.
  • Dissolve: In RO water before adding, or make stock at 1 kg per 1.8 L and dose it as the liquid.
  • Add in order: After magnesium and alkalinity, ten minutes apart, into the sump; stay under 20 ppm a day.
  • Test weekly: With daily dosing; monthly with weekly dosing; correct A, B and C separately.
