Once a reef passes a couple of hundred litres the 500 mL calcium bottle empties faster than anyone likes, and the litre is the sensible step. Red Sea Reef Care Calcium+ Foundation A 1ltr (SKU: RED280b) is the 1 L bottle of Red Sea’s Calcium+ Foundation A, a balanced blend of calcium, strontium and barium in the ratio found in coral skeleton. It is the calcium part of the Foundation A, B and C set used in the Reef Care Program, with the same strength as every size in the range: 1 mL raises the calcium of 100 L of aquarium water by 2 ppm.

Calcium, magnesium, strontium and carbonate are, in Red Sea’s words, the basic foundation elements of coral skeletons, and keeping them in ratio stops any one of them becoming the limiting factor. Red Sea’s recipe targets run from 410 ppm for an ultra-low-nutrient system to 465 ppm for a frag tank, 450 ppm for a mixed reef, and the dose is set from the aquarium’s measured four-day uptake rather than a label amount. Red Sea limits the daily increase to 20 ppm and doses into the sump, magnesium before alkalinity before calcium. A litre raises 200 L by 1,000 ppm in total, about 200 days of a 5 ppm daily draw.

When to Use

• Reefs of 200 to 500 litres: The litre size for a typical home display with stony corals.
• Doser reservoirs: A month or more of calcium in one fill for most tanks.
• Program users: The A line alongside Foundation B (RED281b) and C (RED282b) in the same size.
• Frag and grow-out systems: Higher calcium recipes with a heavier daily draw.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Measure consumption: Four days with no dosing at stable salinity, then divide the drop by four.
• Convert to millilitres: 2 ppm per mL per 100 L; multiply by tank volume in hundreds of litres.
• Keep the order: Magnesium, then alkalinity, then calcium, ten minutes between each.
• Weekly test and log: Trim the dose, and wait for any excess to deplete before resuming.
