Coralline algae is the purple crust every marine keeper wants on the rock, and it needs carbonate, potassium and iron to lay it down. Red Sea Reef Care Coralline Gro 500ml (SKU: RED291) is Red Sea’s KH Coralline Gro, a marine buffer supplement with trace elements that promote the development of coralline algae: a complex of carbonate buffers, potassium and trace elements such as iron, formulated in the ratio coralline algae take up. Red Sea’s strength is that 1 mL raises the alkalinity of 100 L by 0.1 dKH (0.03 meq/L), and the target it sets is about 3 meq/L, or 8.4 dKH.

Red Sea gives it two roles. In fish-only and soft-coral aquariums it is the ongoing buffer, keeping alkalinity near 8.4 dKH while supplying the minor elements coralline needs, since those tanks are not on the Foundation program. In a new marine aquarium it is the buffer used through cycling, replacing Foundation B and forming part of the Reef Mature Starter Kit (RED314), until stony corals arrive. Dosing follows a measured alkalinity drop over four days, divided into daily doses, with the daily change held under 1.4 dKH, added to the sump. Red Sea’s one firm rule is not to use it with Foundation ABC+.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Fish-only and soft-coral tanks: The standing buffer for marine systems without stony corals.
• Cycling a new marine aquarium: The alkalinity component of the Reef Mature program.
• Encouraging coralline: Rock and glass that stay bare despite good light and flow.
• Replacing trace elements: Tanks on infrequent water changes that run short of potassium and iron.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Test alkalinity: Bring it to 8.4 dKH, then dose nothing for four days and measure the drop.
• Daily dose: The four-day drop divided by four; 1 mL per 100 L adds 0.1 dKH.
• Stay under the cap: No more than 1.4 dKH of change in a day, added to the sump or slowly into high flow.
• Retest weekly: Adjust the dose, and wait for any excess to be used before resuming.
