Coral pigments are chemistry, and Red Sea’s Trace Colours series supplies the elements each pigment group is built from. Red Sea Reef Care Iodine+trace Colours A 500ml (SKU: RED283) is the halogen supplement in that series, iodine, bromine and fluorine, which Red Sea links to the pink chromoproteins in coral tissue and describes as promoting the pink colours in corals. Red Sea’s strength is that 1 mL per 100 L raises iodine by 0.03 ppm, which is also the maximum rise it allows in a day, and it recommends running the Trace Colours alongside NO3:PO4-X nutrient control for the best coloration.

Red Sea gives two ways to dose. In a mixed or SPS-dominant reef without a refugium, 1 mL of each Trace Colours supplement is added for every 20 ppm of calcium added per 100 L, so colour elements follow coral growth; in an ultra-low-nutrient system, or where a refugium changes demand, iodine is tested with Red Sea’s Trace Colours Pro kit and dosed to measured uptake, with 0.06 ppm the natural seawater reference. Halogens can affect coral tissue and microfauna in excess, so an overdose is answered with a 50 per cent water change and a halved dose. The four bottles are kept in separate containers.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Link to calcium: 1 mL per 100 L for every 20 ppm of calcium dosed to the tank.
• Or test and dose: Hold iodine near 0.06 ppm; 1 mL per 100 L adds 0.03 ppm, the daily limit.
• Into the sump: Or slowly into high flow away from corals; keep A, B, C and D in separate containers.
• If overdosed: 50 per cent water change and cut the dose by half.
