Iron sits behind photosynthesis, respiration and energy production in coral tissue, which is why Red Sea ties it to the green pigments, and it is the one trace element most reefs run short of. Red Sea Reef Care Iron+ Trace Colours C 500ml (SKU: RED285) is the C line of the Trace Colours series, iron plus a blend of seven complementary elements, manganese, cobalt, copper, aluminium, zinc, chromium and nickel, the eight light metals Red Sea describes as essential to many biochemical processes and related to the green and yellow chromoproteins. Red Sea’s strength is that 1 mL raises the iron level of 100 L by 0.01 ppm.

Red Sea’s optimal level is 0.15 ppm of total iron, chelated and non-chelated, in a reef aquarium, with the daily rise limited to 0.05 ppm. Dosing follows the Trace Colours rule, 1 mL of each colour supplement for every 20 ppm of calcium added per 100 L, or measured iron uptake in ultra-low-nutrient and refugium systems, and Trace Colours D is dosed one-to-one with this bottle. Red Sea is direct about the risk: iron is toxic to invertebrates above the recommended level, so excess is met with a 50 per cent water change and a halved dose.

When to Use

• Trace Colours dosing: The C line, always paired one-to-one with Trace Colours D (RED286).
• Green and yellow corals: Acropora, Montipora and Pocillopora with green chromoproteins.
• Growth-linked routines: Reefs dosing Foundation elements daily to measured calcium uptake.
• Tested iron: ULNS systems holding total iron near 0.15 ppm.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Growth-linked dose: 1 mL per 100 L for every 20 ppm of calcium dosed, with the same volume of D.
• Or test and dose: Target 0.15 ppm total iron; 1 mL per 100 L adds 0.01 ppm, maximum 0.05 ppm a day.
• Sump dosing: Into the sump or high flow, never premixed with the other bottles.
• Tissue regression: Treat as overdose; 50 per cent water change and halve the dose.
