Red Sea Reef Care KH/Alkalinity Foundation B 5ltr — Five-litre liquid buffer for large reefs on dosing pumps

The alkalinity channel on a big reef empties a reservoir quicker than any other, so the 5 L is the size serious systems buy. Red Sea Reef Care Kh/alkalinity Foundation B 5ltr (SKU: RED281a) is the bulk jug of Red Sea’s KH/Alkalinity Foundation B, the carbonate and buffer complex that maintains alkalinity and pH stability while corals draw down carbonate to build skeleton. It is one of the three Foundation supplements in the Reef Care Program and is the same strength as the smaller bottles: 1 mL raises the alkalinity of 100 L by 0.1 dKH, or 0.036 meq/L.

Red Sea’s alkalinity recipes range from 7.0 dKH for an ultra-low-nutrient system to 12.6 dKH for a frag tank, with 8.0 dKH for SPS-dominant reefs and 11.5 dKH for a mixed reef, and the program limits any daily change to 1.4 dKH. A 500 L reef that loses 1 dKH a day needs 50 mL daily, which is 100 days from this jug, dosed by pump into the sump after magnesium and before calcium. Red Sea warns against carbonate-only test kits, which miss total alkalinity, and against adding buffer when calcium is at saturation. Foundation A (RED280a) and C (RED282a) are sold in the same 5 L size.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Large stony-coral reefs: Systems of 400 L and up with a daily alkalinity draw of 1 dKH or more.
  • Dosing pumps: Weeks of buffer in one reservoir fill.
  • Frag farms and multiple tanks: One jug for a rack of systems.
  • Program users at scale: Matched 5 L sizes of A, B and C.

Dosing & Administration Guide

  • Measure the draw: Four days with no dosing at stable salinity, then divide by four.
  • Programme the pump: 1 mL per 100 L per 0.1 dKH; spread the daily amount through the day, never above 1.4 dKH.
  • Sequence: Magnesium, alkalinity, calcium, ten minutes apart, into the sump.
  • Weekly total-alkalinity test: Log and trim; wait for any excess to fall before resuming.
