Nuisance algae and the zooxanthellae inside corals feed on the same two nutrients, so the trick is to lower nitrate and phosphate to a point that starves one without the other. Red Sea Reef Care Nitrate No3 And Phosphate Po4 Reducer 500ml (SKU: RED289) is NO3:PO4-X, Red Sea’s complete, reef-safe, controllable solution for nitrate and phosphate reduction. It is a complex of several carbon molecules and other organically bonded elements, each carbon source used by a different strain of the nutrient-reducing bacteria already in the aquarium, so the population grows and consumes more nitrate and phosphate, which the protein skimmer then exports.

Red Sea calls efficient protein skimming essential, both to keep oxygen up and to remove the bacterial flocs. Dosing is daily, per 100 L of actual water volume, and starts from the nitrate reading: above 10 ppm, 3 mL a day; between 2.5 and 10 ppm, 2 mL; between 1 and 2.5 ppm, 1 mL, in a mixed reef or fish system. Nitrate is tested weekly until it settles at 1 to 2.5 ppm, then twice weekly, and the dose is halved when nitrate falls below 1 ppm; missed days are not made up. It is not used with sulphur denitrators or removal media. A measuring cup is included.

When to Use

• Nitrate and phosphate above target: Mixed reefs aiming at 1 to 2 ppm nitrate and about 0.1 ppm phosphate.
• Nuisance algae: Tanks where film, hair and turf algae are fed by excess nutrients.
• SPS and ULNS systems: Daily dosing to hold very low nutrients for coloration, with Trace Colours.
• Marine fish tanks: Keeping nitrate under 10 ppm in heavily fed fish-only systems.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Start from the test: Per 100 L daily, 3 mL above 10 ppm nitrate, 2 mL from 2.5 to 10 ppm, 1 mL from 1 to 2.5 ppm.
• Dose into the sump: Daily, ideally by dosing pump; without a sump, slowly into high flow away from corals.
• Test and trim: Weekly until nitrate holds at 1 to 2.5 ppm, then twice weekly; halve the dose below 1 ppm.
• Skim hard: Run an efficient skimmer, and do not add missed doses or combine with other nitrate or phosphate removers.
