Potassium is consumed in a reef tank far faster than most keepers expect, and it is the element Red Sea ties to red pigmentation. Red Sea Reef Care Potassium+trace Coral B 500ml (SKU: RED284) is the B line of Red Sea’s Trace Colours series, a potassium and boron complex associated with the production of red pigments in coral soft tissue, the chromoproteins Red Sea names as peridinin and neo-peridinin. Red Sea adds that potassium and boron affect the alkalinity of coral soft tissue and the formation of aragonite in the skeleton, and that potassium helps transport nutrients within the tissue.

Red Sea’s strength is 1 mL per 100 L for a rise of 1.75 ppm of potassium, with the daily increase capped at 10 ppm and natural seawater at 400 ppm as the reference level. Dosing follows the Trace Colours rule, 1 mL of each colour supplement for every 20 ppm of calcium added per 100 L, or, in ultra-low-nutrient and refugium systems, measured potassium uptake. Too much potassium darkens corals through excess zooxanthellae, corrected with a 25 per cent water change and a halved dose. Dose into the sump, never mixed with A, C or D.

When to Use

• Trace Colours dosing: The B line of the four-part colour series on SPS and mixed reefs.
• Potassium-hungry systems: Tanks running heavy carbon dosing or zeolite methods that pull potassium down faster than water changes replace it.
• Red and pink SPS: Acropora and Seriatopora kept for red coloration under a low-nutrient regime.
• Measured dosing: ULNS and refugium systems testing potassium.

Dosing & Administration Guide

• Growth-linked: 1 mL per 100 L per 20 ppm of calcium dosed.
• Or by test: Hold potassium near 400 ppm; 1 mL per 100 L adds 1.75 ppm, no more than 10 ppm a day.
• Add to the sump: Separately from the other Trace Colours bottles, or slowly into high flow away from corals.
• Darkening corals: A sign of excess; 25 per cent water change and cut the dose by half.
