Discus, cardinal tetras and many shrimp come from soft, acidic water, yet plenty of tap water comes out of the tap at pH 7.5 or higher. Serenity pH Down 100g (SKU: SPHD100) is a powdered pH reducer from Serenity, the Australian range also sold as Serenity Aquatics, made to lower the pH of aquarium water. Retailers carry it as a quality Australian-made product, and the 100 g tub is the smaller of two sizes, suited to a single aquarium or to occasional corrections where the tap water is only slightly higher than the fish prefer. It is also one of the two powders paired with Bromothymol Blue in Serenity’s complete pH testing set.

Any pH change should be made slowly, because a sudden swing stresses fish far more than a reading that is slightly off target. The usual approach with a powdered adjuster is to measure the dose given on the Serenity label, dissolve it in a cup of water taken from the aquarium and pour the mixture in where the filter outlet will spread it. After that, leave the tank to settle for 24 hours and test again before adding more, making small changes over several days, or about a week for a larger shift. Water with a high carbonate hardness (KH) resists pH change and can drift back up after dosing, so a test of KH alongside pH explains why a tank may need repeat treatment. Water changes with untreated tap water will lift the pH again, so new water needs adjusting as well.
