Description
Dymax Composeal Brown 50G — Brown bonding sponge for gluing driftwood, roots and branch hardscape without visible seams
Tying a tangle of spider wood into a tree shape is the easy part; making the joins disappear is what usually takes the time. Dymax Composeal Brown 50G (SKU: DM174) is the brown shade of Dymax’s Composeal Bonding Sponge, a non-toxic, quick-bonding compound that fills the space between two pieces of hardscape and, once scaping glue is applied over it, sets into a strong, waterproof and long-lasting joint. Brown is the colour to choose for driftwood, roots, branch wood and warm-toned stone, where the compound reads as part of the wood rather than as a patch. It replaces the conventional tissue paper and glue method, and Dymax notes that no cosmetic touch-up is needed afterwards.
The sponge is packed firmly into the gap while the two pieces are held together, then the glue is spread evenly over the Composeal surface and around to the other side of the joint, and the bond cures within a few seconds. Composeal works with Dymax’s Flora Scaping Glue (DM743a), which is sold separately, and is suitable for aquascapes, terrariums and paludariums. As the glue cures it reacts with the compound and releases a little smoke and smell, so Dymax recommends a mask, goggles and gloves and good airflow, with a fan if possible. Large wood structures are easier to build outside the tank in stages, letting each joint set before the next is added. Because driftwood can float until it is waterlogged, a bonded frame glued to a rock base also helps hold the layout down. The same compound comes in beige (DM158) and dark grey (DM172).
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Driftwood trees: Building branch structures from several pieces of wood.
- Wood onto rock: Anchoring roots to a stone base so they stay put.
- Warm-toned stone: Brown and tan rock where grey or beige would show.
- Paludarium frames: Wood-and-rock structures above and below the waterline.
Placement & Care Guide
- Hold it together: Secure both pieces firmly before filling the joint.
- Fill densely: Pack Composeal tightly into every gap.
- Glue both sides: Spread scaping glue evenly over the sponge and around the joint.
