Absolute Activated carbon 1kg (SKU: CARB1000) is the one-kilogram pack of Absolute’s activated carbon filter media, twice the quantity of the 500 g pack, for the chemical stage of canister, hang-on, internal and sump filters. Its porous structure adsorbs dissolved organic compounds, the yellow colour from tannins and many substances behind odours, leaving water clearer and fresher. The larger quantity suits aquariums of 200 L and up or a fish room with several filters to service. Buying in bulk also means a fresh change is always on hand when water starts to yellow.

As a general guide, about 100 g of carbon treats around 100 L, so a kilogram is roughly a single fill for a 1,000 L system, or ten monthly fills for a 100 L tank. Because carbon becomes saturated, it is replaced on a schedule, typically every four to six weeks, rather than run until the water yellows again. It plays no part in removing ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Rinse each portion before use to remove fine dust, weigh it into mesh media bags, and keep it downstream of the sponges. Store the opened bag sealed and dry, away from fumes such as paint or cleaning sprays, which carbon will also adsorb from the air. Remove carbon during any medication course. Spent carbon is simply thrown out and replaced.
