Description
Active Carbon 1kg Netting Bag — Activated carbon in a ready-to-use netting bag for clear, odour-free water
Driftwood tea, the last traces of a medication course and a tank that smells stale all have the same answer sitting quietly in the filter. Active Carbon 1kg Netting Bag (SKU: SMAC1) is Serenity’s activated carbon, a fast-acting, highly porous filter medium with a large internal surface area that adsorbs dissolved organic compounds from fish waste and other pollutants. The full kilogram comes packed in a netting bag, so it goes straight into a canister, sump or filter compartment without loose granules drifting into the impeller. Serenity lists it for freshwater, planted and saltwater aquariums and for canister and biological filters generally.
Carbon works by adsorption: dissolved compounds lock onto the internal pores until the surface is used up, after which it simply stops removing anything. Retailer guidance for Serenity carbon is to replace it every three months, or sooner if a yellow tint returns to the water. It targets the yellow tannin staining from timber and driftwood, odours, dyes, some toxins and leftover medications. Because it will also take out a medication that is still meant to be working, the bag comes out of the filter for the length of any treatment and fresh carbon goes back in afterwards to clear the residue. Placed after the sponge or floss stage, where the water reaching it is already free of particles, it lasts longer before its pores clog. A kilogram goes a long way in one aquarium: a large canister or sump can take the whole bag, while a smaller filter needs only a portion decanted into a zippered media bag.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Tannin-stained water: Clears the yellow-brown tint that driftwood and other timber release.
- After a medication course: Removes leftover treatment once the course is finished.
- Odours and dyes: Takes out smells and colouring compounds that water changes alone leave behind.
- Routine water polishing: A three-monthly change keeps fresh and marine tanks looking clear.
Placement & Usage Guide
- Rinse first: Run the bag under water until the carbon dust stops clouding it.
- After mechanical media: Sit it downstream of sponges or floss so particles do not coat the granules.
- Out during treatment: Remove it while any medication is in the water, then fit fresh carbon after the course.
- Replace on schedule: Every three months, or as soon as the yellow tint starts to return.
