A canister or hang-on-back filter has little room for media, so every millilitre of it needs to carry as many bacteria as possible. Marinepure Gems 90g (SKU: 102665) is a 90 g box of MarinePure Gems, small pieces of CerMedia’s porous ceramic biomedia about ¾ in (around 19 mm) across. They are made from the same formula as the larger 1½ in MarinePure Spheres, scaled down to fit filter baskets, media bags and nano filter compartments where a sphere or block will not go. Each box provides over 1,450 sq ft (135 m²) of accessible surface area for nitrifying bacteria, packed in a hexagonal box.

MarinePure is designed for ammonia and nitrite elimination, and the Gems are described as giving better control of nitrate as well. In larger, slow-flowing beds the interior of the media can provide anaerobic zones for denitrification, which is why the Gems are also used in sumps and stacked in extra-large filters as a live rock substitute. The ceramic is inert and chemically stable, so it leaves water chemistry as it is. Charterhouse Aquatics lists one box as suited to systems up to 70 gallons (around 265 L); more boxes can be combined for bigger tanks, and the MarinePure Vault (124722) takes over 1,500 Gems in a sump. As with any biomedia, the Gems belong after the mechanical stage, so they stay clear of detritus and keep water flowing through the pores.

When to Use

• Canister filters: Fill a media tray or bag in place of generic ceramic rings.
• Hang-on-back filters: Small enough for the media compartment of a HOB filter.
• Nano and all-in-one tanks: Fits the rear chambers of small all-in-one systems.
• Adding capacity: Extra surface area when stocking or feeding increases.

Placement & Usage Guide

• Rinse first: Rinse off dust in tank water before loading the filter.
• After the sponge: Place after mechanical media so water reaches the Gems already strained.
• Use a media bag: Bagged Gems are easier to lift out at service time.
• Clean gently: Swish in old tank water when flow drops; never tap water, and never replace all biomedia at once.
