Description

MarinePure Plate 8x8x1″ — High-surface-area ceramic biomedia for sumps and filter chambers

A biological filter lives or dies on how much surface area it offers bacteria, and a flat ceramic plate packs far more of it into a filter chamber than loose rubble ever could. MarinePure Plate 8x8x1″ (SKU: 100894) is CerMedia’s flat biomedia plate, an inert ceramic block roughly 8 x 8 x 1 in (about 20 x 20 x 2.5 cm) with an open-pore structure similar in form to natural rock. One plate carries about 5,750 sq ft of surface area, and the material holds more than 80% open porosity throughout, so water moves through the body of the plate rather than only across its face. CerMedia also sells the same ceramic as a thicker block, cubes, spheres and pods for different filter shapes.

The density of the ceramic works out to roughly 150,000 sq ft of accessible surface area per cubic foot (about 510 m² per litre), which is why a thin plate does the job of a much larger volume of bio-balls or rubble. CerMedia gives no official per-tank volume rating; Bulk Reef Supply, a US retailer, notes informally that one plate on its own carries enough area for a tank in the order of 100 US gallons (about 380 L). It can sit flat or on edge in a sump, trickle filter, wet/dry, canister or hang-on-back filter, or directly in the display, and it is brittle enough that a hacksaw, bandsaw or tablesaw can cut it to size without reducing the surface area exposed to water. It suits both freshwater and marine systems and can be seeded before or after a new tank is cycled.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • New sump builds: A flat biological stage sized to fit a chamber of a given footprint.
  • Adding capacity to an existing filter: Extra surface area for a wet/dry, canister or HOB that is undersized for its bioload.
  • Skimmer or pump stands: The flat shape also works as a raised platform inside a sump.
  • Display tanks without a sump: Placed below the substrate or along the back wall for in-tank biofiltration.

Placement & Usage Guide

  • Rinse first: Hose the plate down to clear ceramic dust before it goes in the system.
  • Choose an orientation: Lay it flat across a chamber floor or stand it on edge for a tighter fit.
  • Cut to fit if needed: A hacksaw, bandsaw or tablesaw trims it to size; cutting does not reduce the surface area in contact with water.
  • Rinse periodically: Flush trapped detritus out every month or two to keep flow through the pores.

Product Specifications & Highlights

Key Features

  • High-porosity ceramic: More than 80% open porosity through the full thickness of the plate.
  • About 5,750 sq ft of surface area: Per plate, for nitrifying bacteria to colonise.
  • Flat, stackable shape: Doubles as a stand for a skimmer or pump inside a sump.
  • Cuttable without surface loss: A hacksaw or power saw sizes it to a chamber.
  • Reusable and cleanable: Rinses out and can be sterilised between uses.
