Description
Poly Filter Pad 12″x 12″ — Large Poly-Filter sheet for sumps, big canisters and cutting to size
Large reef and fish-only systems push their water through sumps, filter trays and big canisters, and a small pad cannot cover the whole flow path. Poly Filter Pad 12″x 12″ (SKU: 100500) is the large square sheet of Poly-Filter, the chemical filtration pad made by Poly-Bio-Marine Inc. in Reading, Pennsylvania, for filtering and purifying both fresh and salt water aquariums. At about 30 × 30 cm (12 × 12 in) it has four and a half times the area of the 4 × 8 inch pad, enough to lie across a sump tray or to be cut with scissors into several pieces for smaller filters. Poly-Bio-Marine says it removes ammonia, heavy metals, harmful organics, all forms of phosphate and medications, without removing desirable trace elements.
The medications the maker lists include copper sulphate, formalin, quinine sulphate, malachite green, chelated copper compounds and even antibiotics, taken out after they have done their job. During an ammonia spike the pad adsorbs the excess while the biological filter adjusts, and Poly-Bio-Marine describes it as non-toxic and harmless to biological filtration. In marine and reef systems all bypass should be eliminated, so in a sump the sheet sits in a tray or chamber where the full flow passes through it after mechanical filtration. Remove it before adding medication, vitamins or trace elements, and put it back 12 hours after supplements or once a treatment is finished. As it loads, the pad shifts colour: blue or aqua for copper, orange for iron, red for aluminium, yellowish green for ammonia, and beige through brown to black for organics. A pad that has fully coloured is due for replacement.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Sump systems: Laid across a filter tray or chamber so the full flow passes through it.
- Large canisters: Cut to the shape of a big canister’s media tray.
- Several small filters: One sheet cut into pieces for a group of hospital or nano tanks.
- Post-treatment clean-up: Pulling copper or other medication out of a large system once treatment ends.
Placement & Usage Guide
- Cut to fit: Trim with scissors so the piece fills the tray without gaps.
- Eliminate bypass: Water must go through the pad, not around it.
- Protect the flow: Seat it after floss or sponges, and avoid choking the flow.
- Time the dosing: Remove before medication or trace elements; return after 12 hours for supplements.
