Description
Quantum Bio-active Carbon 1kg — Bacteria-Hosting Activated Carbon for Reef and Marine Filtration
A reef tank that looks slightly yellow under the lights, or a coral that sulks every time a neighbour gets bumped, is usually a dissolved-organics problem. Quantum Bio-active Carbon 1kg (SKU: QA631000) is the Reef Essential answer to it: a granular activated carbon that was first developed for polishing drinking water to ultra-pure standards, then adopted for aquariums because the same pore structure handles coral toxins, tannins and organic waste so well. The 1 kg pack fills about 2 litres of media volume, enough for months of monthly changes on a mid-sized home reef.
What separates this carbon from a bag of generic pellets is the pore profile. A higher share of macropores gives large organic molecules somewhere to go, and those same pores become housing for nitrifying bacteria, so the media keeps breaking down ammonium and nitrite even as its adsorption sites fill. Quantum states that it does not leach phosphate and does not release what it has already captured, which matters when you forget a change by a week. The pack ships with an 800 micron zip bag and a measuring cup, so there is nothing else to buy before it goes in.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Yellowing water: Clears the tint that builds up between water changes and lets the full spectrum of your lights reach the corals again.
- Coral warfare: Strips the toxins that soft corals and some LPS release when they are crowded or disturbed, reducing stress on neighbouring colonies.
- After a medication or metal scare: Runs at the heavy-metal rate to pull residual copper or treatment out of a display before invertebrates go back in.
- Odour and organics: Takes the edge off the sump smell in heavily fed fish-only systems.
Placement & Flow Guide
- Rinse until clear: Wash the measured amount in RODI water until the run-off runs clear before every use, so carbon dust never reaches the display.
- Dose by stocking: Per 100 L each month, use 15 g (30 mL) for a lightly stocked tank, 25 g (50 mL) for a moderate load and 50 g (100 mL) for a heavy one.
- Heavy-metal removal: Increase to 250 g (500 mL) per 100 L when the aim is stripping metals rather than routine polishing.
- Flow and replacement: Sit the bag in a high-flow section of the sump, or run it in a reactor on the slowest setting, and replace it monthly or sooner if the water tints again.
Product Specifications & Highlights
Key Features
- Macropore-rich structure: Built to adsorb large organic molecules such as coral toxins, not just fine colour compounds.
- Biological bonus: The pore network hosts beneficial bacteria that keep working on ammonium and nitrite after the carbon itself is loaded.
- No phosphate leaching: Quantum specifies that the media neither leaches phosphate nor releases what it has adsorbed.
- Drinking-water grade: The same carbon was developed for ultra-pure water sanitisation before it was offered to reef keepers.
- Bag and cup included: An 800 micron zipper bag and a measuring cup come in the pack.
